On average, high-end laptops last at the most 4 years within your inventory. Take the hardware inside them down a notch, and you only end up with 3 years. That's not a long time.
So, what have companies growing these last few years done with all their inventory when their CPUs start to fry?
How do companies with employees in multiple countries dispose of equipment properly while adhering to local environmental regulations?
Not finding the correct method of retiring a trusted piece of hardware can lead to fines and pollution. Distributed teams need to simplify their device lifecycle management to avoid high costs and their laptops ending up in landfills.
With GroWrk's End of Lifecycle (EOL) feature, you can access a list of sustainable disposal options for individual devices or in bulk.
Proper IT asset disposition is essential to protecting your organization's sensitive data and not being a jerk to the environment. Through the sustainable disposal of old IT equipment, your company can minimize data breaches and electronic waste.
GroWrk offers four device disposal options: recycling, destruction, buyback, and donation. Here’s what you can expect from each option:
1. Request EOL services from the GroWrk Dashboard
Choosing any EOL option creates an order request you can follow on the GroWrk Dashboard. You can request these services directly from your inventory or through an employee profile. The equipment must be collected and transferred to your inventory if a device is with an employee.
2. Transfer device ownership to GroWrk
Before making an end-of-lifecycle request, you must transfer the device's ownership to GroWrk. You can accept the ownership transfer terms directly on the platform.
3. Receive a quote for the requested services
Once an EOL service is requested, GroWrk staff reviews the order and provides a detailed quote. You can then approve or decline the order. Service availability may vary by country, and some services might incur additional fees.
4. Device is retired and data is protected
GroWrk ensures data destruction or wiping before any action is taken for every service. We offer certified data wiping or physical destruction of the Hard Disk Drive or Motherboard. This guarantees that data will be irreversibly removed and cannot be recovered.
5.Receive a disposal certificate
Additionally, we provide certificates of destruction (e.g., Blancco certificates) and certificates of compliance with AAA and NIST standards for recycling and destruction services, ensuring that your data is securely handled and the environmental impact is reduced.
1. Request an EOL order for your devices
You can request End of Lifecycle orders from your Inventory or an Employee Profile. If you make the request from your Inventory, you can select both devices stored at a warehouse and devices assigned to an employee. Requesting an EOL order from the Employee Profile only allows you to choose devices assigned to that employee.
In both cases, you can select one of the four order options on the menu icon next to a device. If the device is in use, you’ll see the option “Collect for End of Lifecycle.” This means that the device will be collected at the Employee’s address and transferred to a warehouse to initiate the chosen EOL process. If the device is already in a warehouse, you’ll see the option “End of Lifecycle.”
2. Transfer ownership of the device to GroWrk
To proceed with the EOL service, you must transfer the device's ownership to GroWrk as part of the order process. A modal will appear asking you to agree to the ownership transfer terms.
3. Select a pickup address
To collect devices still with employees, specify a pickup address and add any necessary instructions before confirming the order.
4. Approve the order
Once the device is at a warehouse, you will receive a quote for the requested service. You can then decide to approve or decline the service.
5. Download your certificate
Upon completion, you will receive a certificate of disposal or destruction, confirming that the process met all required standards.
Offboarding multiple devices can be complex, especially when managing assets across different employees and locations. GroWrk’s bulk EOL ordering feature simplifies this process, allowing IT teams to retire multiple devices at the same time while ensuring compliance with security and environmental standards.
You can place bulk EOL orders under the following conditions:
If you’re retiring multiple devices assigned to a single employee, navigate to their Employee Profile. Use the Manage button and select Collect for End of Lifecycle to initiate a bulk order.
Reviewing selected devices
Once you’ve selected devices for an EOL order, you’ll see a confirmation screen listing all items. Review the products and modify them if needed before proceeding.
To place a bulk EOL order through Inventory, select multiple devices using the checkbox column. Then, click the Request End of Lifecycle button and choose your preferred disposal option (Buyback, Destruction, Donation, or Recycling).
Managing EOL orders across multiple regions
If devices are located in different regions, GroWrk will automatically split the bulk order into separate orders for each location. This ensures compliance with local disposal regulations and streamlines logistics.
